Aula Groups is a great way to divide students either automatically or manually into project groups, or to manage communication between groups of students and an educator.

To create a group in Aula, you will first head over to the Space Settings and then select the Groups tab. From here, you'll click on the New Set button.

Each group set will be used for one particular activity—whether that's for a particular assignment, project or task—you might have throughout the term. For example, if you have three different group assignments in one term, you will end up with three different group sets.

Next, you'll give your new set a name and decide if you'd like it hidden from students at this time or not.

From here, you have two options:

  • Auto generate groups: this will automatically divide your students into equally numbered groups of your choosing. This could be used if you want to mix up your students into random groups. Additionally, you can automatically place your students into a group conversation. Group conversations will appear in their Direct Messages.
  • Manually generate groups: this will give you as the educator the chance to select which students are in each group. You can also create a group conversation which may or may not include educators. This might be used when you want to assign students into particular groups.

Once groups are created, you can edit them by clicking on the pencil icon. This will enable you to change the group settings or delete the group after saving
